Day 8 - Quotes and Thoughts

Success requires focus on important tasks, attention to detail, and a balance between goal-oriented and task-oriented thinking. Fostering an open and transparent environment to address both task and relationship conflicts enhances productive teamwork.

✍️
Those who tend to focus on daily tasks are better at managing things that don’t change much or that require processes to be completed reliably. Task-oriented people tend to make incremental changes that reference what already exists. They are slower to depart from the status quo and more likely to be blindsided by sudden events. On the other hand, they’re typically more reliable. Although it may seem that their focus is narrower than higher-level thinkers, the roles they play are no less critical. - Ray Dalio (Principles)

  • One of the factors that bring our success is "focus". This is because we need to focus on getting important things done to achieve milestones. Our goal will be, then, achieved with the complete milestones.
  • We can practice our focus by trying to complete individual tasks on time. To effectively complete an individual task, we need to pay attention to details and think deeply about them.
  • If you are a person who focuses on details and works on specific tasks in your team, you need to be proud of the fact that your pieces of work are ones that support the other team members to get their jobs done.

✍️
Those who tend to focus on goals and “visualize” best can see the big pictures over time and are also more likely to make meaningful changes and anticipate future events. These goal-oriented people can step back from the day-to-day and reflect on what and how they’re doing. They are the most suitable for creating new things (organizations, projects, etc.) and managing organizations that have lots of change. They typically make the most visionary leaders because of their ability to take a broad view and see the whole picture. - Ray Dalio (Principles)

  • Spending most of our time on details without having a long-term goal or understanding a big picture will not be effective because it makes us fall into the infinite hole of task execution without reflection and growth. Hence, it is important to balance both the goal-oriented thinking and the task-oriented thinking.
  • Having the goal-oriented thinking is challenging because it requires us to put our efforts on experiencing the specific tasks as well as on reflecting any action that we made to create a workflow for productivity and growth.

✍️
Your reports have to believe that you’re not their enemy—that your sole goal is to move toward the truth; that you are trying to help them and so will not enable their self-deception, perpetuate a lie, or let them off the hook. This has to be done in an honest and transparent way, because if someone believes they are being pigeonholed unfairly the process won’t work. As equal partners, it is up to both of you to get to the truth. When each party is an equal participant, no one can feel cornered. - Ray Dalio (Principles)

  • As a manager, you will not only need to think objectively and execute reasonable actions but also influence others in your team to do the same thing. To achieve this, you will need to create an environment that is open and transparent for everyone to honestly share their constructive feedback.
  • Two common conflicts in a team are the task conflict and the relationship conflict.
    • The task conflict occurs when we disagree on instances of knowledge. Normally, this type of conflict aims to improve the body of knowledge or a particular piece of work.
    • On the other hand, the relationship conflict occurs when we have the relationship problems with each other (e.g., ego, enemy-like, etc.). This type of conflict can potentially destruct the body knowledge or a particular piece of work.
  • As an effective manager, you will need to have strategies to address relationship conflict and build a culture where everyone trusts each other and is willing to share the truth.
